A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE TWO-DAY MUSLIM SUMMIT, ORGANISED BY AMANAH LEGACY FOUNDATION (ALEF) AT SIR VICTOR UWAIFOR CREATIVE HUB, AIRPORT ROAD, BENIN CITY, EDO STATE ON THE 6TH AND 7TH OF DECEMBER, 2025

The summit themed “THE ROLE OF THE MUSLIM UMMAH IN PROMOTING GOOD GOVERNANCE” brought together Islamic scholars, academics, traditional rulers, policy experts, opinion leaders, women organizations, youth representatives, and government appointees, featured four (4) plenary lectures and two (2) panel discussions, facilitated by seasoned resource persons. The summit came up with the following:

  1. Resolves to reaffirm good governance as a moral, ethical, and civic obligation central to sustainable development, social justice and peaceful coexistence.
  2. Calls upon Muslims, Islamic institutions, and community organizations to intensify civic education, political awareness, and responsible participation in governance with Islamic values and universal principles.
  3. Urges Muslim leaders, public office holders, and aspiring leaders to uphold integrity, transparency, accountability, justice, compassion, and service to the public good as foundational leadership principles.
  4. Strongly condemns corruption, nepotism, tribalism, greed, selective justice, and all unethical practices that undermine equity, meritocracy, and public trust in governance system.
  5. Affirms that leadership is a sacred trust, for which leaders are accountable to society and ultimately before Allah, and must therefore be exercised with sincerity and responsibility.
  6. Emphasizes the necessity of impartial justice, fairness, and equality before the law in all public and private institutions as a means of strengthening institutional credibility and social cohesion.
  7. Recommends the revival and institutionalization of self-accountability and moral self-assessment among leaders and citizens, in line with classical Islamic guidance on personal responsibility.
  8. Recognizes the critical role of family, moral upbringing, and righteous companionship in nurturing ethical leadership and responsible citizenship.
  9. Calls upon parents, guardians, educators, and faith-based institutions to collaborate in safeguarding the moral, psychological, and digital wellbeing of children and youth.
  10. Underscores the strategic importance of youth empowerment and participation as catalyst for leadership renewal and governance reform.
  11. Encourages initiatives that build confidence, competence, and ethical readiness among Muslims to overcome political apathy, fear, and disengagement from public affairs.
  12. Appeals to Amana Legacy Foundation (ALEF) to institutionalize capacity-building initiatives, including leadership academies, mentorship programmes, and workshops focused on ethical governance.
  13. Further appeals to ALEF to promote holistic empowerment of Muslims, particularly youth, encompassing educational, moral, psychological, physical, and civic dimensions.
  14. Resolves to position responsible leadership and active civic engagement as legitimate, necessary, and urgent obligation of the Muslim Ummah in contemporary societies.
